Ugly Sticks and Umbrella Trees

ugly stick - a percussion musical instrument made from an old mop or broom handle with beer caps ir nail heads attached to make a jingling sound. A second stick is carved with a serrated side and is dragged along the ugly stick like a fiddle bow or is used to strike the ugle stick to make noise. There is often an old rubber boot, shoe or coffee can on the end.

umbrella tree - a landmark in my community

  1. One of childhood's cruelest barbs: "He's so ugly that he fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down."
So, if this is so cruel, why do I repeat it?
I liked to climb trees when I was a kid.

  6. When someone is not pleasant to look at, I say he was whipped with an ugly stick. When someone is even more unpleasant, I say he didn't just get whipped with an ugly stick, he got whipped with the whole tree.

  8. Some people can make those ugly sticks sound great. (I am not one of them)

The umbrella tree is the only one of its kind I have seen, it sits alone overlooking the Harbour and is known by everyone who goes to the community (great spot for singing Betty, no around to hear)

  9. So that's an ugly stick. I've often heard about it but didn't know what it was.

  11. Ugly stick is a real thing?!

I'd only heard it in this phrase "Did your mama beat you with an ugly stick". LOL.
