Newfoundlanders are renowned for their kindness and terms of endearment "my lover", "me ducky", "me doll" and "me son" which immediately put you at ease and fill you with a sense of belonging. There are many examples I could site of Newfoundlanders opening their homes and hearts to help out someone in need.
The letter that Obama wrote on the 10th anniversary of September 11, when 38 passenger planes were diverted to Gander in the hours after the attacks.
The story of Lanier Phillips after surviving the 1942 Truxtun and Pollux Disaster and the people of St Lawrence. (the above photo contains my Nanny and Poppy and my taken by my Great-Aunt Ena)
A very caring community!

DeleteOh, I loved that book - WHEN THE WORLD CAME TO TOWN - about when the planes landed on 9/11. A great read and a great community!
ReplyDelete:) that's based on Gander
DeleteThe 9/11 story is absolutely amazing and proves just how kind and hospitable the people of Newfoundland are. Awesome to know that there's even more stories of kindness from Newfoundlanders as well, reading about that really does warm the heart.
ReplyDeletethere are a few great examples out there :)
DeleteI have not seen the documentary is quite a while but they saved and helped this ship bound for England during the war that sank and many helped them out and would have drowned or froze if not for the wonderful people. I hope i am not missing this one and that it was Newfoundland people
ReplyDeleteThat may be the story of the Truxtun and Pollux (they were 2 naval ships that ran aground)
DeleteThe Canadian Spirit is somehow ten fold on the rock.
ReplyDeleteanother reason to be proud of living here :)
DeleteThis is indeed something special!
ReplyDeleteHey we're neighbours. I live in NB and from what I've seen of Newfoundland it looks absolutely beautiful, I'd love to visit someday! And although all easterners have that crazy Canadian flair, there does seem as though there's something extra special about newfies. :)
ReplyDeleteHave fun with a-z.
LOVE NB! haven't been there in years, but its a beautiful spot
DeleteI think everyone remembers that moment from 9/11. Thanks for reminding us.
