The Mummer's Song
I've mentioned Mummers (aka mumming or janneying) here before, but I love it. So here's the short version.... during the 12 days of Christmas, men and women throw pillow cases over their heads, disguising themselves in old clothing padded in the all wrong places and going from house to house visiting, playing music, singing songs, disguising their voices and drinking your booze, while the homeowners try to correctly identify them.
Well, that is really unique! I think my Ninja outfit would give me away though.
ReplyDeleteWow, I had never heard of this before! How funny.
ReplyDeleteSounds like fun.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a cool idea, some would find it bizarre but I find it an awesome and unique sounding tradition.
ReplyDeleteI have heard of this before as i love Christmas and have read up on a variety of customs. In Germany-Bavaria area they have the devil come to the home with someone else(oops memory block)-he is called the Krampas. Sounds like he has a cramp in his ass. I like the Mummers much better especially that one gets some drinks:)
ReplyDeleteSounds a little scary, actually :)

People do this in Newfoundland? The song was kinda catchy...reminded me of a sea shanty. But the tradition would be a little weird to an outsider. I've heard of mummers before but I never knew the story. Thanks!
