How to annoy me - coffee time

Yesterday, 10:30am, in a Starbucks on Yonge Street, on the way back to my hotel room after the most important, super crazy OSCE of my life. (Ok it wasn't crazy, I actually feel pretty good about it, but it was scary as hell, and I have to wait 2 weeks for my results.)

I stood waiting behind a woman who was preparing her drink, or should I say…science experiment. She was carefully measuring, stirring, eyeing, weighing and concocting her coffee… you’d swear one wrong move and the damn thing would explode in her hand.

She would grab two little pink sugar packets a time between her index finger and thumb, and start shaking them to get all the sugar to move to the bottom of the packet then she would flick them with her other hand.

Shake, shake, shake…flick, flick, flick…shake, shake, shake,…flick, flick, flick

I watched her add SIX packet’s to a 8 oz. cup of coffee. Sipping the coffee between each packet to be sure that it was *perfect*.

Then came the milk.... she had to examine each container before opening it to sniff it be make sure it wasn't "off". As she started to pour the milk little by little into her cup, she began the tasting sequence again.

Then came the sprinkle of chocolate shavings....

By the time she shimmied out of the way, my Americano was nearly cold.

I was only waiting for a lid!

- Perhaps its just me, but if I'm going to Starbucks, I want to be able to at least TASTE the coffee! Anyone else drink their coffee black?

  1. Yup...I drink it black. I have no interest in coffee flavoured milk and sugar. Couldn't they put a pile of lids off to the side for the grab and run artists like us?

  2. Mostly black coffee for me, but if it is of dubious quality I'll add some 1/2 & 1/2.

  3. I don't drink coffee but I like to watch people wait for it in line at Starbucks. It's very entertaining.

  4. I'm annoyed just reading this. Thank goodness I wasn't behind her.

And yes, I drink my coffee straight up as it should be. BLACK>

  7. I drink it black with one sugar, but don't usually patronize Starbucks. Sure the coffee is good, but I find good coffees in many gas station convenience stores.
Your experience would particularly annoy me, but there are boorish people almost everywhere at times.

  8. I've drunk (drank? drinked? droonked? WHATever!) my coffee black ever since I went into the Navy in 1976 (yes, I am THAT old). The main reason is that we rarely had sugar and never liquid cream (always a powder creamer, which usually fossilized). It was so much easier to get my cuppa Joe (I even know the origin of the term 'Joe.' One day I'll share it. The story, not my Joe) straight from the pot, blacker than my first girlfriend's heart. Besides giving me a jump-start in the morning, it stains my teeth (hmm, that's probably not a good thing).

  9. I've only had Starbuck's a few times, cuz I'm cheap. When I have gone, I get them to fix it the way I want it, nothing extra to add. (and they even put the lid on it for me)

  12. Hah, you definitely might have been waiting behind my friend Rachel. She is a scientific, six pink packet coffee drinker! Sorry it was cold by the time you got to it.

  15. I like cream, but nothing extra. I don't see what the point is- otherwise, get yourself a carton of ice cream!
