A is for A red sky at night...

Welcome to my first post of the 2013 A to Z challenge.  This is my third time doing this challenge, the first time I participated I went through the Newfoundland Alphabet, the second time I went through Newfoundland Communities.  This year, I'm going to take you again to my island, this time via Newfoundland colloquialisms, lore, music and recipes.

"A red Sky at Night - Sailor's Delight;  A red Sky in the Morning - Sailor's Warning"
A red sunset is a sign of fine weather, a red dawn is a sign of rain and storm.

Traditional Newfoundland fishermen were very conscious of the weather.  They had to foretell weather from the signs they observed in nature, and plan their trips carefully.

- Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend, we are spending the day driving back from my parents house to our part of the bay :)

  5. I always thought it was:
Red Sky at Night, Sailor's Delight
Red Sky in Morning, Oh Crap and Me Without an Umbrella
    Yours is much more poetic

  6. I think that little saying is pretty much global. I wasn't up in time to see sunrise this morning but judging by the looks of things out there I'm willing to bet it was really really red.

  11. Cape Codders also swear by 'red sky at morning, sailors take warning, red sky at night, sailor's delight'. It's really true too.
