I is for....Isle aux Morts

Isle aux Morts - pronounced AISLE-ah-MORT

With a population of 813, this small community is on the Southwest Coast of Newfoundland, close to Port aux Basques. The town is named after a formerly inhabited nearby island and is a reference to the many shipwrecks off the coast.

Heard of Isle aux Morts? What about these Newfoundland I's?

  3. Irelands eye....now how did that place get its name? It sounds like it would be green and beautiful and full of descendants of original Irish settlers.

  6. Some of the travel mags highlight these islands upon occasion. I'd love to visit one or two. Isle aux Morts' name really tickles the imagination.

  7. 813 people? I couldn't ever live some place that secluded. It must be really hard to get internet service in a place like that. Or the movie theater, or a sewing store!

    1. some things are harder to get, I agree (most instances you need to drive to another community) but there are aspects of small town living I love

  14. There's an "Ireland's Eye" off the East coast of...Ireland. A small island.

With a name like Isle-aux-Morts, I guessed there had to be a grim aspect to the naming. Shipwrecks qualify.
