U is for Ugly Stick

The ugly stick has played a role in Newfoundland party times throughout the years.  It's about four feet long and is decked out in bottle caps, tin cans, small bells,  rubber boots, old sneakers and other assorted noise makers.  Its played by thumping the stick and hitting its attachments.  An ugly stick is a mummer must!

  2. For some reason the fact that there actually is such a thing as a physical ugly stick has made me really happy.

  5. I've always heard this term used to describe an ugly person...as in 'they got beat with an ugly stick'....

Never knew it was a real thing.

  9. Gotta love the name...reminds me of why people placed cans on the bumper when they got married. It was to ward off the evil spirits and bring nothing but good to the newlyweds
