B is for Bonavista


Pronounced BAWN-ah-VIS-tah


Giovanni Caboto (John Cabot), was contracted by England’s Henry VII to find new lands, and a sea route to the Orient. Cabot set sail from Bristol, England in his ship the Matthew in 1497. When Cabot first saw land he’s reputed to have said "O Buon Vista" (“Oh, Happy Sight!”)

  6. Oh, how charming! Are all those places in Newfoundland? The sky looks so close in that picture, which is funny. You'd think a place known for cold would not be that way.

  7. Love the photo, as well as the slice of history.

    Never been to any of those places. :( The farthest north I've ever gotten was Nova Scotia. I was in Bridgewater though, which is a 'B' word. Does that count?

    1. Cape Breton (Nova Scotia) is similar to Newfoundland - so it kind of counts :)
