guess where I am??

In Central Newfoundland, that's where!!

Good news: We made some headway with husband's house hunting trip and arrived on the island Tuesday past.

Bad news: our cell phone carrier does not work here! Depending on where we lay our heads we may or may not have WiFi. Bad news when your house is on the market in Ontario, and your relatives are all 4 hours away.

We're having a great time, there are currently 2 houses we like, and hope to view a second time tomorrow before placing a bid!

I'm back in Ontario September 1st, and I PROMISE I will catch up with all your blogs then (at the latest, would do it prior, but this post alone has taken over an hour to get done)

Happy Pancake Day!

Its Shrove Tuesday (aka Pancake Day) for much of North America. Traditionally, pancake day is the day before Ash Wednesday and is the last day before the beginning of 40 days of Lent. During Lent, its customary to give up little pleasures. Years ago, it was customary to give up eating meat for Lent, and to use up things like meat, butter, flour, the tradition of Pancake Day began. Pancake Day, is the last day to use up these ingredients before the Lent season begins. In today's society, some people will give up using credit cards for Lent, or drinking pop, or eating chocolate, maybe even give up coffee or swearing (gulp, good luck to you).

Back home, we got our own traditions on Pancake Day, with church breakfasts and the such. And just about everyone I know participates in making and eating pancakes for the supper.

Now here's the twist! In Newfoundland, you are supposed to put trinkets into your pancake batter. Each trinket was symbolic of the future and it was so much fun as a child to try to find the trinket that you wanted. The trinkets traditionally used were the following:

-- a penny, to symbolize poverty
-- a nickel, to symbolize wealth
-- a string, to symbolize a fisherman (if a boy got the string, he would be a fisherman, if a girl did, she would marry one)
-- a wedding ring, to symbolize that you would marry soon
-- a button, to symbolize that you would never marry
-- a nail, to symbolize that you would soon pass away
-- a thimble, to symbolize that you would be a seamstress (a girl) or a tailor (a boy)

As kids my sisters and I would to consume far too many pancakes in search of money (because the rule in our house was that if you didn't eat the pancake you couldn't keep the money). The only thing that went into our pancakes was money!

Kiddo woke up with dollar signs behind her eyelids today, she has already seen the pile of loonies and toonies on the counter wrapped in tin foil!

Ummmm pancake day!

Edit--> I got $2.53 in my pancakes.

Any mummers lowed in?

Its pretty fair to say that I'm more than just a little homesick the past few days. If I was home tonight, I'd be out mummering with my sisters.

Mummering or Jannying has been a tradition in Newfoundland since colonists from England brought the custom over in the beginning of the seventeenth century. Mummer comes from the old French ‘momer’ which means to wear a mask; pantomime. In particular, it refers to a masked or costumed merrymaker, especially at a festival.

Christmas revellers disguise themselves with old clothing and cover their faces with a hood, scarf or mask and go from house to house in their community sometime during the twelve nights of Christmas.

Mummers usually carry musical instruments so they can entertain; sing and dance in the houses they visit. In exchange for a cup of grog and a bit of Christmas cake of course. Then a great guessing game ensues as everyone tries to guess the identities of the mummers. if guessed correctly, the mummers remove their masks, if not they can keep them on.

Happy Tibb`s Eve

Husband and I just tore up the LCBO making sure we had the necessary provisions for the next couple of days. 3 bottles of Rodrigues Blueberry Wine (was all that was available in the city; I`m on the wish list for more)Lambs Black Sheep and some Rickards Red to go along with the Screech that Mudder sent up in my care package.

Today being Tibb's Eve and all... the plan is to hunker down in front of the fire place, watch The Grinch, and have a little taste. Being away from home is rough for me, especially during the holidays.

For all you UpAlong-ers, Tibb`s Eve in Newfoundland marks the end of the long wait for the Christmas season. It's also referred to as "tipsy eve" since its the first night of the Christmas season where you go house to house and have a few socials. For even more info check out this article in the The Southern Gazette.

Smiles

Its snowing! Funny thing about Ontario, we have a little dusting of snow and people are in a panic wondering if our exam will be cancelled this afternoon. Seeing as how I haven't used a shovel in my three years here I somehow doubt it.

Bonfire Night

As a kid one of my favorite holidays in Newfoundland was November 5, bonfire night. I'm using the term holiday lightly, because I don't actually remember getting a day off school for it. People gather up anything flammable, pile it up and set it on fire. Then depending on the size of the fire we'd roast hot dogs, burn marshmallows, and just dance around like hooligans, and chase the cast off flankers.

Last night husband, kiddo and myself put fire log in the chimenea and celebrated Guy Fawkes Night away from home. (Ok, its not the roaring fire of tires and boughs and anything else flammable, held down on the beach, with 1/2 the community, but what can you do; we did blare the Newfie music, and have a few swallies.)

Silly me, burned my marshmallow.

Happy Thanksgiving

Wishing you always...
Walls for the wind,
A roof for the rain
And tea beside the fire.
Laughter to cheer you,
Those you love near you,
And all that your heart may desire.
Happy Thanksgiving!

The wrath of Igor

Hurricane Igor assaulted Newfoundland yesterday. Damage along the Burin Peninsula varied, with some being hit worse than others. These are pictures that were taken yesterday evening after the rain stopped in and around my home town.

The water flows over the dam

Trees are pulled up by their roots

The roof is off a building down the road

Power poles are being fixed

My cousin's cabin is flooded

The road between St. Lawrence and Lawn is washed out

My family is fine, like many others they spent the majority of yesterday bailing out their basement without power. There are others in the community and other parts of the island who sustained major damage to property, my thoughts are with them.

Here are pictures taken about 7am, during the storm.

Hurricane Igor hits home

All day I've been getting emails and texts telling me to check out the pictures my Aunt posted on facebook of home. They are getting hit HARD!

Water is comming up through the manhole covers

The road in front of the school is full of rocks and debris

Partial source of the debris in the road, the soccer field

Mom and Dad are currently bailing out their basement without power. I hope the damage is not too bad.

More Vacay!

I'm up and on the go today, no longer smothering with the flu. Today's task involves sorting through aprox 600 pictures taken during my 18 day trip home and deciding which ones to develop, which ones to store on my digital frame and which ones are garbage. Here are a few of my favorites (for various reasons).

Alot of my time was spent on the beach.I love the waves crashing.

What you find on the beach.

The tide pools.

At times its so calm you forget its the ocean.

Sometimes you want to sit and take it all in.

Or play.

Either way its home.

It will always take my breath away.

My community was once known for its mining; fluorspar

and its fishing.

Up on the barrens you see a lot of pitcher plants.

And whore's eggs among the partridge berries.

But one of my other favorite spots in my fadder's cabin.

Let's not forget the moose!

Out and a'boat in Newfoundland

2 days left to my vacation in Newfoundland, and then I'll get my act togeather I promise! Being around the Bay has its up and its downs. Ups - I'm HOME, downs - no WiFi for 99% of my vacation. I was driving today and got some reception and iPhone nicely told me today that I had 42 unanwsered texts. I won't tell you how may unanwsered emails I have.

This is the view from my parents front step.

The wind farm in my community (I still say it was constructed to blow the fog out to sea)

Typical foggy day laundry

The evening fog burning off the Cape

The other side of the Cape, without the fog!

Chamber Cove

There are many more shots to come, but since I only gots 2 days left, they will have to wait!

I got mail!!

Well, technically I got it on Friday, but my daughter's babysitter "hid" it from me. I was arsing around this morning, looking for some text book or another, and I see a cardboard box wedges between the couch and bookcase... hummm that don't belong there. Knowing full well that mother's day is next week, I resist the urge to unearth the box immediately, instead I wander down to the family room and check on husband and kiddo. They're watching TV, the coast is clear.

I hurry up over the stairs and back to the box. Yank it out of its hiding spot, its addressed to me, which means fair game. I'm not having it sit in the corner a whole nother week. Mine, mine! Like a child at Christmas the box gets one, two shakes, then I'm face and eyes into it.

I got a care package! YEAH! I got 3 bottles of bakeapple jam, 1 bottle of partridge berry, a packet of savoury, and a little tub of gravy base.

So here I sit with the jar of jam on one side of me and a spoon in my mouth, trying to figure out how many calories are in bakeapple jam! At this point I don't think it really matters the jar is 1/2 gone, and I'm not sharing.

Just wish I found the box Friday, could of had some toutons with the jam.

Schmaltz

Every so often I get nostalgic. I grew up around the bay, in a small Newfoundland fishing/mining community, spending the bulk of my days out by the door. I miss the gulls squawking "mine mine mine", the taste of the salt air, and the crashing of the cold waves. I miss the beach where I spent hundreds of hours combing for treasure. I miss home.

Tonight after supper, husband told me to get aboard the car, no further explanation, he knew I was having one of those days when it takes more out of me not to cry, than to do anything else. He took me to my favorite spot in Niagara. (no its not the Falls)

Jordan Beach, if I close my eyes its almost like home, without the salt.

Of course Kiddo and Tina Bean went with me. There is definately something to be said for the power of family, the cool air and the crashing waves.

August can't come soon enough.
