Celebrate the small things, March 22 edition

I'm Celebrating the Small things again this week!  This week I'm celebrating kiddo's accomplishments - 87.9% average on her report card (YEAH) and her school concert band won Gold in the Kiwanis Music Festival (YEAH)

Last week I eluded to the possibility of the "S" word being just around the corner... today school was cancelled due to snow, so I'm celebrating another "S" word - sleep!  That extra 30 minutes is more than welcome.

Celebrate the small things March 8

I'm Celebrating the Small things again this week!  This week I'm celebrating having my car back - the  alternator belt came off and it was in the shop Monday to Wednesday waiting for a part.  3 days without a car makes you appreciate it when you get it back.

This one's for you!

I just turned the last page of the book I am absorbed in.  I have no follow up on my kobo.  This week is dragging on forever.  I find myself in a stupor putting a tea bag into the toaster, and bread into my mug.  I must be coming down with something.  My cell phone beeps a message.

The message from my sister (aka Stupid Penguins)  reads:  "So I'm doing an assignment and researching abd randomly ends on this blog page.  I read away as I have an unhealthy love for blogs.  Eventually reads she's from here.  Killing me not to know who thus wity, delightful, funny genius is---/ it's dawn !"

She received the same text from a friend of hers from home, and forwarded it to me.  So... to the sender of the text, Thanks, I know who you are, and you made my night! (spelling mistakes and all)

** did anyone notice my reply "from who??"  I'm too modest to say shucks, I know I'm awesome! :)

Arrrr?

Living by the ocean, often feels like you're at the edge of the world.  Tons of stuff gets washed up on the shores all the time.  Every now and then, I like to think up stories about where the stuff came from.

Glass? Empty grog bottles hurled in the ocean by pirates. Obviously.

Wood?  Splinters from wooden legs.  Of course.

Footwear?  Easy.  Was attached to the wooden leg at one point.

But this, this one baffles me....

What would a pirate be doing with a keyboard?

I'm that kid of girl!

I'm the kid of girl who wears snowman pajamas in the summer while wearing 2.5 inch red leather heels and drinks wine while sweeping the floor...

Know why? Because its my Birthday and I can do whatever I want :)

What died in here?!

The past few days it has gotten warmer again, the sun is shining, jackets have been replaced by hoodies, the snow is gone and the car hasn't been sleeping in the garage. This morning as I climbed into my car, I was assaulted by an unusual stench. My first thought was that husband had let one go, so I attempted to be a good wife, and didn't say anything, just nonchalantly rolled down the window and dropped him off at work.

With husband out of the vehicle, I rolled the windows back up and popped onto the highway. Well, b'y the jumpins, that smell was still there.

I hate the windows down on the highway, so it made for a rather interesting 25 minute commute. The whole while trying to figure out what had climbed in my car and passed away, not breath and watch where I was going at the same time.

I pulled into the school parking lot and debated if I really wanted to know what was lurking under the seats. I mustered up the courage to look, half expecting a green sandwich, instead I got..

A COFFEE MUG! Yep, one of my missing travel mugs. Seems 'someone' accidentally left something in the mug and hide it under the seat to grow mold. It was so vile that the lid was stuck on.

Now I'm not going to point fingers, or lay blame (because I'm trying to be a better wife for lent) but kiddo doesn't drink coffee, and I don't lose things.

Are you trying to tell me something here?

I woke up this morning to this email form husband...from what I gather he's a bit upset that we ran out of toaster strudel, but I can't be 100% sure.

An Ode to Toaster Strudel

I woke up today the same as most mornings, to the deafening beep of the alarm clock you for some reason don't hear. I lay there and debated the tasks ahead of me, hating the idea shovelling of the snow that fell yesterday, and another coal inspection. I stumbled out of bed, and crawled blindly into the kitchen. When I got there and saw that the coffee pot was not pre-set I realized that, in fact, there IS a god, and that he wanted to offer me nothing but sadness for the remainder of the day. That is, until I opened the freezer and saw that beautiful orange box with the little dough boy on the front. Ummm, Toaster Strudel. Quick, warm, easy, wonderfully tasty pastry embracing bright red jam. If that's not enough, these breakfast sweets have a self administerable frosting topping, as if to say "Yes, I'm THAT delicious, but YOU can make me even better."

I reached up into the freezer to claim said Strudel as my own, and felt nothing. My hand desperately reached into the bottom of the box. "Perhaps they fell out of the box", I repeated to myself. After nearly 5 minutes of vacant searching I abandoned my quest and turned to the Cheerios. Apparently, the box had been left as a cruel trick to lure me into thinking that life had purpose.

I will miss you Toaster Strudel, even though I never met you.

P.S. kiddo had Cheerios too.

P.P.S. I might be home for lunch.

Conspirancy afoot?

Passing by kiddo's doorway last night I hear "Its mom! Abort! Abort!"

I'm not sure I want to know what's up, so I'm choosing to believe that her and husband are planning something good for March break as a surprise for me...

Stand back he's all mine, Heart Day edition

Husband and I agree we weren’t going to do a whole big thing for Valentine’s Day this year; because we have a lot of other things going on; I had clinic until 8:00 and a pathophysiology test this morning.

I woke up yesterday morning and figured a card or a hand scrawled note would be waiting. I mean, c’mon, he bought kiddo a heart shaped box of chocolates, and book light. Flowers would be nice but they die quickly, chocolates would’ve been great, booze is always a winner or cinnamon hearts or maybe some conversation hearts. (I love conversation hearts, I lick off letters here and there and make new words, I mean its not everyday you get candy that talks to you.)

I had a card all ready to give him, but you can be damned sure I wasn't giving him anything until I got my card!

Well, I went off to school, and I waited thinking any minute I'd get a sappy email or a text. And I waited, or maybe he'd book himself in for my 7 pm appointment. And I waited.

I got a facebook notification that he had written on my wall. "Happy heart day". I was so glad I didn't give him that stinking card.

I got home last night, still no card.

So I pick him up today after work, he bounds into the car grinning from ear to ear, and thrusts a card at me, written inside.. "You said you didn't want to do anything for Valentine's day this year, so I was waiting for 1/2 price chocolate day, then I was going to buy you chocolate body paint, but at the last second, I didn't think you'd like it. Happy Not Valentine's Day."

Now that’s romance!

Next year I want a dozen roses, a bottle of wine and some chocolates.

Blast from the past

I was out beating the path today instead of studying, when something familiar caught my eye. TAFFY! As a kid this was one of my favorite things to buy, for twenty five cents you got chewy tri-flavour goodness wrapped in wax paper.

In the store jumping up and down with excitement, I noticed that the wax paper is now crimped at both ends instead of cut to size with the sugary treat, which could account for some of the $1.04 price increase.

Back in the car I gnawed away the wax paper and chomped into the brown, it gave way under my teeth with a brittle crack, my impatience had won and I didnt' wait to get my treasure to a more temperate climate. Curse you winter weather!

I still ate the brown first, then the white and finally the pink. Its gonna a lot longer for me to save up my pennies for my next piece, but now that I know where to go look out!

Smarty Pants

Kiddo made it through the 1st round of the speak offs, and me being the proud momma, calls all family to fill them in. Nearing the end of the conversation with my second youngest sister, she asked me a question...

Me - (talking into the phone to sister): "I' been known to be wrong once or twice, so don't quote me but I'm pretty sure that's how you do it."

Kiddo - (across the room, watching TV and barely paying attention to me) "Mom, every knows you've been wrong more than twice."

I didn't see that one coming!

cherries on top

Its Sunday morning.

The bathroom renovations are still underway. (unforeseen plumbing problem, unforeseen ceramic tile problem, me accidentally losing 2 hammers and my sanity)

The bulb in my 53" rear screen projection TV went out on Friday.

Kiddo accidentally bumped into a rather large potted plant sending it crashing to the floor, spilling its dirt all over the carpet the same day that my central vac hose refuses to suck.

I walk into the kitchen, husband is cooking a wonderful breakfast (sweet potato wedges, eggs, sausage and toast) and there is kiddo, sitting at the table scooping giant spoonfuls of jam onto her plant.

She has found my hidden jar of breakfast sanity; also known as sweet cherry jam, and is removing all the jam to get the full cherries for herself. She sees me and begins scooping the jam back into the bottle.

Is it too early to open a bottle of wine?

Mini Me

This afternoon I took a few hours and sorted some old pictures into albums, and gave them to kiddo to have a look while I went to prepare supper. I could hear her laughing in the living room as she gazed on the images of herself. A few minutes passed and she came into the kitchen.

"Mom, is bubble gum considered a toy? You know, because I get to play with it for a little while before you make me spit it out."

She's her mother's daughter alright!

This is the photo that sparked the question. She was 6 when it was taken.

Could-a, should-a, would-a Wednesday

Could-a...

gone to the store to get some cleaning supplies to clean my nasty shower and mop my tea-spotted kitchen floor

Should-a...

paid some bills and worked on my nutrition assignment

Would-a...

gone to class, except its snowing out, and I didn't want my 25 minute drive to be a 50 minute drive

Instead, I...

- did a quick clean of the floor (let the dog lick up the tea)
- bugged kiddo
- didn't get out of bed until noon
- caught up on a bunch of blogs and found some new ones
- rewatched american psycho on netflix

How I does it

Back to the grinding wheel. Today marks the first day of my last semester of school. 13 more weeks of class, exams and comprehensives and then my board certification. I can almost taste it. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I can.... just imagine how hard the next 13 weeks are going to be, UGH!

Let's not dwell on that shall we. Let's look at the positive...

Its the first Monday of 2011, and by week's end that ugly avocado green toilet in the downstairs bathroom will be history! Husband doesn't know it yet, but during his week off work, he gets to install the new one. I bought it yesterday, and hid the receipt so he can't return it. (Ok, so its not the most grown up way to get a new bathroom, but it works. Don't judge me.)
